The Japanese reached the final of the international bracket after beating the Asia-Pacific region 7-2 in the semifinals in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
Japan could face the same opponent in the final on Saturday, as the Asia-Pacific team will take on the Caribbean representative in the second semifinal on Thursday.
The Caribbean lost 4-0 to Asia-Pacific in the second round but came through the consolation bracket and are now one game away from reaching the final.
Regardless of the nature of their opponents, it’s hard to look past Japan in the final as they have outscored opponents 32-2 in three games so far. The Japanese have reached the international final for the third consecutive year and will be looking to reach the world championship game for the second time in three years.
On the U.S. side of the draw, meanwhile, the West region reached the final after beating Southeast 12-9 in a closely-fought semifinal and will be hoping to defend the title it won a year ago.
As is the case with the international bracket, the two teams could meet again in the final, provided that Southeast beats Southwest in the semifinal.
The latter lost to the West region in the first round, but emerged as the comfortable winner of the consolation bracket beating.
West has looked impressive throughout the tournament, albeit not as dominant as Japan. The region has outscored opponents 23-11 en route to the final.
The winners of the two finals meet in the championship game on Sunday, with the losers squaring off in the consolation game.
