After he sustained a tear in 2016, doctors told Ellington he would likely suffer a recurrence and have scar tissue, so the decision was made to remove the semitendinosus, one of the three muscles that make up the hamstring.
The muscle is located at the back of the thigh and helps flex the knee and bend the hip, but Ellington is somehow managing without it.
“I don’t know if it’s fully recovered,” he replied when asked if his hamstring had healed, in quotes reported by MLive.com.
“Because they removed it. So I don’t have it anymore.”
Ellington is not the first player to have the procedure, though, after former Houston Texans wide receiver Andre Johnson had the surgery, and former NFL cornerback Jimmy Hitchcock played without both anterior cruciate ligaments in his knees.
Ellington recently signed with the Lions and has recorded 12 catches for 80 yards in his two games with the team.
